The videogame company said it believes ongoing court proceedings in the United States could eventually force Apple to provide more transparency around the fees it charges developers through its App Store system. “Once Apple is forced to show its costs, governments around the world will not allow Apple junk fees to stand,” Epic said in a statement.

Epic, the U.S. game studio backed by China’s Tencent, first sued Apple in 2020 after challenging the company’s in-app payment policies. Epic has argued that Apple’s commission structure — which can reach 30% on digital purchases — unfairly restricts competition, per Reuters.

“Apple knows the U.S. federal court will force it to be transparent about how it charges its App Store fees,” Epic said.

According to Reuters, “Fortnite” returned to Apple’s U.S. App Store last year after being removed for nearly five years during the legal dispute. The title remains one of the most recognizable online games globally, drawing millions of players each day through its battle royale format, where users compete until only one player or team remains.

The game also generates substantial revenue from optional in-game purchases, including cosmetic upgrades and character customization items, according to Reuters.

Epic’s announcement comes during a difficult period for the company. Earlier this year, the developer disclosed plans to eliminate more than 1,000 jobs as player engagement for “Fortnite” weakened amid economic pressures and slower consumer spending, per Reuters.

The company added that the game has still not reappeared on Apple’s Australian App Store. Epic said Apple continues to apply several developer policies that courts previously determined were unlawful, according to Reuters.
