The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotech firm has deployed more than 750 internal AI models across scientific, regulatory and operational workflows since partnering with <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/\">OpenAI<\/a> in early 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Hantavirus, a rare pathogen with fatality rates above 30% for some strains, is one of the diseases in its research roster. Bloomberg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-08\/moderna-hantavirus-efforts-underway-before-cruise-ship-outbreak\">reported<\/a> the company had been running early-stage hantavirus vaccine research with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases and Korea University\u2019s Vaccine Innovation Center before a cluster of cases emerged on a cruise ship in April.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/st%C3%A9phane-bancel-8185251\/\">St\u00e9phane Bancel<\/a>, Moderna\u2019s CEO, has been direct about the scale of what the company is attempting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we had to do it the old biopharmaceutical ways, we might need a hundred thousand people today,\u201d Bancel said, according to an OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/moderna\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIf%20we%20had%20to%20do%20it%20the%20old%20biopharmaceutical%20ways%2C%20we%20might%20need%20a%20hundred%20thousand%20people%20today%2C%E2%80%9D%20said%20Bancel.%20%E2%80%9CWe%20really%20believe%20we%20can%20maximize%20our%20impact%20on%20patients%20with%20a%20few%20thousand%20people%2C%20using%20technology%20and%20AI%20to%20scale%20the%20company.%E2%80%9D\">post<\/a> highlighting their partnership. \u201cWe really believe we can maximize our impact on patients with a few thousand people, using technology and AI to scale the company.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>750 Tools in 2 Months<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The foundation of Moderna\u2019s AI strategy is a company-wide rollout of <a href=\"https:\/\/chatgpt.com\/business\/enterprise\/\">ChatGPT Enterprise<\/a>. The company started in early 2023 with mChat, an internal chatbot built on OpenAI\u2019s application programming interface (API) that reached 80% employee adoption. When ChatGPT Enterprise launched, Moderna ran a structured comparison of mChat, Microsoft Copilot, and the new platform. Within two months of adoption, Moderna had 750 GPTs built across the company, 40% of active users had created their own tools, and each employee averaged 120 conversations per week on the platform.<\/p>\n<p>Moderna\u2019s change management program ran for roughly 20 months before the ChatGPT Enterprise rollout. It included a company-wide AI prompt contest, a cohort of 100 internal AI champions, and an internal forum that now draws 2,000 active participants each week.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>From Dosing Decisions to the Legal Team<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Inside the clinical operation, one of those 750 GPTs is doing work that once took weeks. Dose ID, a tool built on ChatGPT Enterprise\u2019s data analysis features, helps the clinical study team verify optimal vaccine doses. It analyzes large trial datasets, applies standard dose selection criteria and generates charts of findings for human review before a candidate advances to late-stage trials.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mworkneh\/\">Meklit Workneh<\/a>, director of clinical development at Moderna, <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/moderna\/\">said<\/a> the tool lets the team analyze data from multiple angles.
