showing its net profit more than tripled to 1.83 trillion yen, or $11.6 billion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SoftBank has invested more than $30 billion in OpenAI and said it had recorded a cumulative $45 billion increase on that stake in the last year, much of it during the fourth quarter. This helped offset losses on investments in companies such as Klarna.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company\u2019s initial investment in OpenAI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/investment-tracker\/2024\/openai-reportedly-slated-for-500-million-softbank-investment\/\">came in 2024<\/a>, when the artificial intelligence (AI) startup was valued at $150 billion. That figure has since ballooned to $852 billion following a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-valued-at-852-billion-in-latest-funding-round\/\">record round<\/a>\u00a0of funding last month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/85b9fe04-0d70-482e-bd27-9c87c1ebfc01?syn-25a6b1a6=1\">report<\/a>\u00a0on the earnings by the Financial Times notes that SoftBank\u2019s ability to take part in the funding rounds that have boosted OpenAI\u2019s valuation \u2014 which can then in turn bolster SoftBank\u2019s numbers \u2014 has caused some analysts to express concerns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report cites a note from analyst Atul Goyal at Jefferies, who has characterized the situation as\u00a0\u201ccircular funding dynamics,\u201d\u00a0writing in a note that of the estimated $70 billion in actual cash OpenAI has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openais-new-funding-round-could-exceed-100-billion\/\">raised<\/a> in the last year, nearly 85% has come from SoftBank.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-2781867707\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis concentration creates a self-reinforcing valuation loop,\u201d Goyal wrote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other OpenAI news, PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster wrote about the company\u2019s efforts \u2014 and those of Amazon \u2014 to develop a device to take on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/\">Apple<\/a>\u2019s iPhone.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/why-openai-amazon-and-apple-want-to-be-the-smartphone-in-your-pocket\/\">conventional analysis<\/a>\u00a0of these moves focuses on whether OpenAI or Amazon can compete with the iPhone,\u201d Webster wrote. \u201cHistory would say, whoa, not so fast.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/amazon\/2026\/amazon-drafts-ai-smartphone-strategy-to-support-digital-services\/\">The Fire Phone<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/retail\/2017\/microsoft-windows-phone-discontinued\/\">Windows Phone<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/2013\/report-at-and-t-scraps-htc-first-facebook-smartphone\/\">Facebook phone<\/a>. The graveyard of failed smartphone challengers is deep and well-populated with some of the biggest names in tech. Then again, maybe that was then and this could be what\u2019s next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question, she added, is not whether OpenAI is able to outsell Apple. Rather, it\u2019s what happens when a company that has 900 million weekly active users and 50 million paying subscribers decides that it wants to stop accessing those users via another firm\u2019s hardware.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ChatGPT is the largest tenant in the Apple App Store, with Apple taking a piece of every subscription sold through it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s a business relationship that works until it doesn\u2019t.
