acquisition happened earlier this year and covers the company\u2019s small staff and intellectual property, The New York Times (NYT) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/05\/15\/technology\/openai-weightsgg-voice-cloning.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Friday (May 15), citing sources familiar with the matter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report noted OpenAI\u2019s revelation two years ago that it had developed the ability to replicate human voices with AI. The company said this tech was so advanced that it chose not to release it as a precaution. The Weights.gg acquisition, NYT added, shows the company has continued its work on voice AI, even as its position from two years ago has not changed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the acquisition, the report added, Weights.gg provided a consumer app called Replay, that let users clone voices, including celebrities such as Taylor Swift and Samuel L. Jackson, both of whom have opposed the use of AI to clone their voices. (Swift has even gone as far as applying to the U.S Patent and Trademark Office to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/elevenlabs-opened-a-music-store-while-taylor-swift-lawyered-up\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trademark her voice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and likeness.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also pointed out OpenAI\u2019s history of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cpi-posts\/openai-faces-scrutiny-over-copyright-rules-in-upcoming-sora-release\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copyright issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including the ones that arose from the company\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/openai-abandons-its-sora-video-platform-to-focus-on-super-app\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">now-shuttered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> video generation tool Sora.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it\u2019s not clear what OpenAI wants to do with the Weights team and technology, employees have been reassigned to work across different parts of the company, sources told NYT, adding that OpenAI is unlikely to put out a product similar to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/weights.gg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weights.gg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"pymnt-3012144780\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the meantime, the report continued, OpenAI has focused on weaving voice tech into other parts of the company. It recently began offering third-party developers information on how to use OpenAI\u2019s application programming interface (API) to incorporate OpenAI\u2019s voice technology into their apps and services.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These uses include things like providing real-time voice translation services or using voice commands to interact with AI agents, NYT said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PYMNTS reported last year on research showing that AI has reached a point where <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/artificial-intelligence\/2025\/ai-voices-are-now-indistinguishable-from-humans-experts-say\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cloned voices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and genuine ones are indistinguishable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAI-generated voices are all around us now,\u201d said lead author Nadine Lavan, senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London, per a LiveScience report. \u201cWe\u2019ve all <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/retail\/2026\/amazon-bets-on-voice-as-agentic-commerces-winning-ai-interface\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spoken to Alexa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or Siri, or had our calls taken by automated customer service systems.
