400;\">Upwards of 40% of chief executives plan to reduce junior roles in the next year or two, and change the composition of their staff to mid-level and senior workers, according to a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwymanforum.com\/ceo-agenda\/how-ceos-navigate-geopolitics-trade-technology-people.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by management consulting firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oliver Wyman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings, released last month and flagged in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-05-16\/ai-poised-to-tilt-job-market-leverage-toward-older-workers?srnd=homepage-americas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Saturday (May 16) by Bloomberg News, showed that just 17% of CEOs plan to make junior roles a larger part of the mix. Last year, those numbers were basically reversed, with companies planning to shift their workforce to more junior roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think the junior level is definitely finding it harder now to enter the workforce,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/our-culture\/our-people\/john-romeo.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Romeo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who heads Oliver Wyman\u2019s research arm, told Bloomberg \u201cIt\u2019s those mid- and senior-level employees that CEOs are now looking at to drive productivity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bloomberg report added that this is due to the types of tasks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/tag\/ai-agents\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI agents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can perform, such as writing code at the level of a junior developer. But agents can\u2019t always make judgment calls based on the insight gleaned from years of experience, the report noted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the employment issues, the Oliver Wyman report also found a \u201cdeepening\u201d AI divide, with many companies still bogged down in planning how to use the tech. Two-third of the businesses surveyed said their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/financial-services-firms-lead-enterprise-ai-adoption-as-85percent-boost-budgets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AI adoption<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was still in the planning and pilot stage, with 53% saying it is too soon to gauge a return on their investment, up from 41% in last year&#8217;s report.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"pymnt-2903738483\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYet those scaling AI across two or more use cases report roughly twice the ROI, measured in both cost savings and revenue gains,\u201d the report said. \u201cSize is critical, too: Nearly five times as many mega-size companies report AI-driven cost savings above 10% compared with their midsize peers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s in keeping with research by PYMNTS Intelligence from the report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/study_posts\/no-roadmap-no-problem-how-enterprises-are-reinventing-the-ai-workforce\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo Roadmap, No Problem: How Enterprises Are Reinventing the AI Workforce,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0which found that large U.S. companies have mostly moved beyond experimentation to embed AI into day-to-day operations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYet the path forward is far from standardized,\u201d PYMNTS wrote last week, with the research showing \u201cthat while most executives see AI as essential to future performance, their strategies vary by industry, and their confidence in execution remains mixed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the findings in the study: half of all surveyed CFOs expect AI to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/artificial-intelligence\/2026\/34-percent-of-cfos-say-productivity-is-the-top-reason-for-ai-adoption\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">create new roles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> requiring new skills, even as 47% anticipate job cuts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>For all PYMNTS AI coverage, subscribe to the daily <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/subscribe\/\">AI\u00a0Newsletter<\/a><em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>\r\n\twindow.pymntsAllowedArticleCount = 1;\r\n\twindow.pymntsPostID = 3739629;\r\n<\/script>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New research shows artificial intelligence-related job cuts could begin to favor older workers.
