transactions and events that need to be monitored as growing exponentially,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.linkedin.com\/in\/simone-maini\">Simone Maini<\/a>, CEO of blockchain analytics firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elliptic.co\/\">Elliptic<\/a>, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that modern compliance operations still depend heavily on manual review, with analysts investigating alerts, tracing wallets and flagging suspicious behavior, she said, according to the report. That system begins to fall apart when financial activity starts happening continuously.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere simply aren\u2019t enough compliance analysts specializing in digital assets in the world to be able to keep up with these volumes,\u201d Maini said, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>This matters for the crypto sector because stablecoins, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/bank-regulation\/2026\/tokenized-securities-move-closer-mainstream-finance-after-new-guidance\/\">tokenized assets<\/a> and AI-driven payments are increasingly viewed as a source of growth as traditional finance moves into the digital asset realm, the report said. This will require compliance and monitoring systems to scale accordingly.<\/p>\n<p>The report came days after Elliptic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/investment-tracker\/2026\/elliptic-raises-120-million-to-bring-blockchain-analytics-to-big-banks\/\">raised<\/a> $120 million to develop what Maini described as an agentic compliance system, AI-powered tools designed to automate transaction monitoring and investigations that would otherwise be too much for compliance teams.<\/p><div id=\"pymnt-767967005\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" style=\"margin-top: 50px;\"><p style=\"text-align:center\">Advertisement: Scroll to Continue<\/p><script async type=\"text\/javascript\" id=\"dianomi_context_script\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dianomi.com\/js\/contextfeed.js\"><\/script> \r\n<div class=\"dianomi_context\" data-dianomi-context-id=\"4329\"><\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cAs transaction volume is growing, cost per alert handling, cost per investigation is falling,\u201d she said, per the CoinDesk report. \u201cFor us, what we\u2019re essentially doing for our customers is inverting that cost curve in compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, cybercriminals are employing the same <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/cybersecurity\/2026\/ai-cyber-threats-shake-crypto-industry\/\">AI tools<\/a> that help compliance teams in carrying out their attacks, the report said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI can equip the bad actors with the ability to perform hacks, scams at a scale that they couldn\u2019t do when they were reliant on writers,\u201d Maini said, per the report.<\/p>\n<p>The rise of AI in the financial world could trigger a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/security-and-risk\/2026\/next-bank-run-may-start-with-ai-hack-not-bad-loans\/\">bank run<\/a>, and it would not take a \u201ccinematic cyberattack\u201d for that scenario to come to pass, PYMNTS reported Friday (May 15).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could start with a wave of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/news\/security-and-risk\/2025\/account-takeovers-surge-as-banks-scramble-to-respond\/\">account takeovers<\/a>, false balance information, blocked payment access or fraudulent transfer attempts affecting a visible group of customers,\u201d the report said. \u201cIf customers believe their money is unsafe or inaccessible, they may move deposits quickly.
