400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Tuesday (May 18) from Bloomberg News, which characterizes the proposal from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sec.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securities and Exchange Commission<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SEC) as one that could reconfigure the U.S. stock market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sources told Bloomberg that the SEC could unveil its &#8220;innovation exemption&#8221; for tokenized stocks as soon as this week, establishing a framework for betting on public companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As covered here Wednesday, tokenization creates digital representations of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2026\/tokenized-real-world-asset-value-jumps-fourfold-to-26-billion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">real-world assets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like shares or bonds, on a distributed ledger.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Regulators view the technology as a primary driver for efficiency, potentially streamlining security issuance and asset management while lowering costs and enhancing market resilience,&#8221; PYMNTS wrote in a report on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2026\/uk-regulators-unveil-blueprint-for-asset-tokenization-in-wholesale-markets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar proposal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the U.K.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In what the Bloomberg report calls a surprise move, the commission is leaning toward permitting the trading of tokens that don&#8217;t have the consent of the public companies whose shares they track, the sources added.<\/span><\/p><div id=\"pymnt-830523094\" class=\"pymnt-content pymnt-entity-placement\" notes that this move would be among the most significant regulatory tests of whether stock trading can occur within crypto infrastructure without the safeguards found on traditional equity markets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report also points out the vulnerabilities at play here. For example, this year has seen several decentralized finance platforms <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2026\/podcast-inside-the-9-billion-defi-hack-thats-shaking-cryptos-foundations\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">targeted in hacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that siphoned away hundreds of millions in digital assets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sifma.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (SIFMA) has warned that a lack of standards like market interconnectivity and price transparency for tokenized markets could cause markets to &#8220;fragment and become disorderly.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf third parties can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/blockchain\/2025\/robinhood-dealing-with-fallout-of-tokenized-equities-offering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tokenize<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apple<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without the issuer at the table, there\u2019s no theoretical limit on how many wrappers of the same company exist at once,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/securitize.io\/press-releases\/brett-redfearn-advisory-board\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brett Redfearn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, president of tokenization firm <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/securitize.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Securitize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and former director of the SEC\u2019s trading and markets division, told Bloomberg.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis could create a whole new level of market fragmentation and could leave investors less certain what their shares are actually worth at any moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report added that the exemption has been presented as a way to let companies experiment with tokenized securities without violating US securities laws.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, industry players like Citadel Securities and SIFMA have warned that broad exemptions for tokenized stocks could hamstring investor protections such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pymnts.com\/artificial-intelligence-2\/2026\/agentic-commerce-pushes-know-your-human-into-verification-processes\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know-your-customer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (KYC) and anti-money laundering (AML) laws.<\/span><\/p>\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>\r\n\twindow.pymntsAllowedArticleCount = 1;\r\n\twindow.pymntsPostID = 3744248;\r\n<\/script>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration is reportedly readying a plan for trading digital versions of securities.
